Repairing Newcastle’s iconic Earl Grey House

Our team is currently working on external façade repairs at Early Grey House, a stunning Grade II listed mixed-use building on Newcastle’s world-famous Grey Street.

The building was built in 1837 as part of the Grainger Town regeneration and has a well-known cultural history within Newcastle’s city centre.

Earl Grey House is located in the heart of Newcastle’s Grainger Town, one of England’s first designated conservation areas. This is due to the historical and architectural significance of its mediaeval 13th-century Dominican priory, sections of the historic Town Walls, and many fine Georgian and Victorian buildings.

Over the last six years, our team has become familiar with Early Grey House, working closely with our client to provide a comprehensive refurbishment of the building, including new street frontage, reception area and several modern, minimalist offices.

Our long-standing relationship with the client has led to the completion of several fit-outs and major structural works across three floors of the building, including work on the Everyman cinema located in the basement.

The project required high-quality fit-outs to ensure that the renovated space could be preserved as a heritage site in the future. All work on this building, both internally and externally, proved to be a difficult environment to work in, with planning and heritage preservation being of the utmost importance.

Newcastle Council planning and conservation officers praised both the design and our work for their exceptional quality. The project went on to win second place in the Regional RIC Awards, which, along with being the client’s trusted contractor for six years, is a testament to our team’s expertise and commitment to our projects.

Earl Grey House has since become Newcastle’s first building to receive a 1* FitWel certification, establishing it as a market leader in sustainability and occupier wellness standards.
